So, tell me, how did your carpet get flooded? Did your washing machine hose finally manage to work it’s way loose in search of freedom? Or was it because you bought the house just down the hill from the river at a price that was too good to refuse?
Whatever the cause, you need to take action. It’s time to give a little back to that carpet that has looked after you, put up with the filth that comes off your shoes, endured torment over the years from your pets’ weak bladders, and suffered many injustices from your small children. You need to get that carpet dried before mould takes control, sapping the life out of it and banishing it to a dark world where bacteria reigns supreme. Time is crucial, you’ve got two to three days to start the drying before the familiar odour of musty, wet carpet fills up your house and taps you on the shoulder to let you know it’s there.
You probably already knew that mould is a health hazard, so it surprises me how often people choose to do nothing about their flooded carpet situation until it’s too late. Mould can cause coughing, wheezing, sneezing, nasal congestion and respiratory infections. People who already suffer from asthma, allergies, weakened immune systems and lung diseases can have their symptoms worsened. They are also more susceptible than normal to suffering from these symptoms as well as other serious health problems when mould is present.
When you do call a company to restore your flooded carpet, make sure you choose someone who knows what they’re doing. Without the right training and equipment your carpet may be insufficiently dried or can be irreversibly damaged and even shrink! Choose a company who is certified to perform a flood restoration and ask to see their certificate before they start the work. Most reputable restorers, like Adelaide Carpet Fresh, are be certified by the IICRC – the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification. Just look for ‘Water Damage Restoration’ on their certificate to be sure that they know what they’re doing.
While you’re waiting for you flood restorer to arrive, do them a favour by moving everything off of the wet carpet area. If you have any books or paperwork that’s important then you may be surprised to know that these can be saved from the water damage if they are frozen immediately. Through a process known as sublimation, the water (ice) in your documents, photos, maps, books can be quickly changed from ice to gas, without entering the damaging liquid stage again.
Get your carpet dried now and your carpet will thank you by accepting many more years of your abuse!
